The Courage to Be is Tillich’s best-known work. That this work has retained such popularity perplexes one as a Tillich scholar since this text is anything but easy to understand. This essay offers an analysis of the concepts ‘theism,’ ‘absolute faith,’ and ‘God above God,’ and comes to the conclusion that both proponents of this work as well as its theological critics have misunderstood, and indeed that only because of these misunderstandings could the work have become a bestseller (...) at all. Diese Untersuchung beschaftigt sich mit den Bedingungen der Moglichkeit sinnvoller religioser Rede auf dem Hintergrund der Uberlegungen Wittgensteins. Scheinen zunachst - dem eindimensionalen Sprachparadigma seiner Fruhphilosophie entsprechend - keine solchen Bedingungen benennbar, so ergeben sich durch das mehrdimensionale Sprachparadigma der Spatphilosophie ganz neue Moglichkeiten. Jetzt sind nicht nur die Bedingungen der Moglichkeit sinnvollen religiosen Redens auf neue Weise wieder gegeben, sondern auch konkrete Aussagen uber die Art und Weise theologischen Redens mit gesetzt. Demnach verbieten sich bestimmte, vor allem vermittlungstheologische Denkweisen, (...) weil sie auf Vorstellungen beruhen, die nach Wittgenstein nicht mehr haltbar sind. Als eine Aufgabe von Theologie wird nun die Darstellung der Selbstvergewisserung der eigenen so genannten grammatischen Satze deutlich. Aus dieser Perspektive heraus wird skizziert, wie die Symboltheorie Paul Tillichs weiter entwickelt werden musste, um die fundamentaltheologischen Implikationen der Philosophie Wittgensteins aufzunehmen.". If this is accepted one may ask why one should not use the term "ontology" for this enterprise. It is the structure of being which is under inquiry, and this is what ontology is supposed to do. But the difficulty is that there are structures of less universality like nature, man, history, which also precede in logical dignity anything concrete in their respective spheres but which are not structures of being as such, and which, consequently, are not objects of ontology (...) in the strict sense of the word. Therefore, if the word "metaphysics" can be saved from its supranaturalistic connotations, it should be used. If, however, this is impossible, the term ontology must be enlarged so that it embraces all structures which constitute reality. Both ways are open. (shrink)
